If you’re looking to brand your vehicle, you’ve got two main options: a full van wrap or vinyl lettering. Both get your business seen on the road, but they’re very different in cost, durability, and the impression they create.
At DE Signs North East, we’ve been fitting vehicle graphics for over 45 years โ from single-van sole traders to full fleets of 20+ vehicles. Here’s our honest breakdown to help you decide which is right for your business.
What’s the Difference?
Vinyl lettering involves cutting individual letters, shapes, or a simple logo from self-adhesive vinyl and applying them directly to the vehicle’s bodywork. Think of it as the “essentials” approach โ your business name, phone number, website, and maybe a simple logo.
A full van wrap covers the entire vehicle (or most of it) in a printed vinyl film. It turns your van into a moving billboard with full-colour graphics, images, patterns, and eye-catching designs that wrap around every panel.
Cost Comparison
Let’s be straight about the numbers:
- Vinyl lettering: Typically ยฃ150โยฃ400 per van, depending on the amount of text and number of colours
- Partial wrap: ยฃ400โยฃ800 โ covers key panels (doors and sides) but not the whole van
- Full van wrap: ยฃ1,200โยฃ2,500+ per van, depending on vehicle size and design complexity
If you’ve got a fleet of five vans, that’s the difference between ยฃ750 and ยฃ6,000+. So it’s worth thinking carefully about what you actually need.
When Vinyl Lettering Makes More Sense
Don’t let anyone tell you vinyl lettering is the “cheap option” โ it’s the smart option for a lot of businesses. Here’s when it’s the right call:
- You’re a sole trader or small business with one or two vehicles โ you need people to know who you are, not win design awards
- Your van is older โ spending ยฃ2,000 wrapping a 10-year-old Transit doesn’t make financial sense
- You change vehicles regularly โ lettering is cheaper to remove and reapply on a new van
- Your industry is straightforward โ a plumber, electrician, or builder doesn’t need fancy graphics; a clear name, number, and service list does the job
- You want it done today โ vinyl lettering can be designed, cut, and fitted in a day
Done well, vinyl lettering looks clean, professional, and gets your message across instantly. People don’t need to be blown away by your van โ they just need to read your number and remember your name.
When a Full Wrap is Worth It
A full wrap is an investment, but when it’s done right, it pays for itself. Here’s when to go for it:
- You’re in a visual industry โ catering, events, photography, design, or food delivery where your van is part of your brand image
- Your van is your main advert โ if you’re parked at job sites, customer driveways, or busy roads all day, that’s free advertising space worth using
- You want to stand out from competitors โ a striking wrap makes you look bigger and more established than you might be
- You’ve got a new vehicle โ wrapping a brand-new van that you’ll keep for 5+ years makes the cost-per-month very reasonable
- You need complex branding โ if your brand uses gradients, photographic elements, or bold patterns, lettering can’t achieve that
Durability: How Long Do They Last?
Both options use high-quality cast vinyl, but there are differences:
- Vinyl lettering: 5โ7 years before fading or peeling becomes noticeable
- Full wraps: 5โ7 years on average, though edges and high-wear areas (door handles, fuel caps) may need attention sooner
The key factor isn’t the vinyl itself โ it’s the installation quality. A poorly applied wrap will peel at the edges within a year. A professionally fitted one will look great for years. That’s why it matters who you trust to do the job.
Can You Wrap Over an Old Sign?
If your van already has old lettering or a previous wrap, we can wrap over it โ but only if the existing vinyl is removed first and the paintwork underneath is in good condition. Wrapping over old graphics means the outline of the old text will show through the new wrap. Not a good look.
We always remove old graphics, clean the surface thoroughly, and check for any paint damage before applying new vinyl. It adds a bit of time to the job but makes a massive difference to the finish.
The Hybrid Option: Best of Both Worlds
Here’s something not many sign companies will tell you: you don’t have to choose one or the other.
A partial wrap with vinyl lettering gives you the best of both. We wrap the back doors or side panels with a full-colour graphic โ maybe a photo of your work, your logo, and a tagline โ then add clean vinyl lettering on the cab doors with your name, number, and website.
This typically costs ยฃ500โยฃ900 per van and gives you 80% of the visual impact of a full wrap at 40% of the cost. For most small to medium businesses, this is the sweet spot.
Real Example: The Arch Venetian Van
Recently we did the livery for Arch Venetian โ a full vehicle wrap that turned their van into a proper head-turner on the roads of Newcastle. The design featured their brand colours, contact details, and a clean layout that reads clearly even at 30mph. That’s the power of a full wrap done right.
On the flip side, we’ve done hundreds of vans with simple vinyl lettering โ name, number, website, a small logo โ and those customers are just as happy. The right choice is the one that fits your business and your budget.
Our Advice: Start With What You Need
Before you spend a penny, ask yourself:
- What do I want people to do when they see my van? (Call me? Remember my name? Visit my website?)
- How long will I keep this vehicle?
- What’s my realistic budget?
- Do my competitors have wrapped vans, and do I need to match or beat them?
Bring those answers to us and we’ll give you honest advice โ even if that means telling you that simple lettering is all you need. We’d rather have a happy customer who spent ยฃ200 than one who feels they overspent on a wrap they didn’t need.
